The U350 is a sub-1-inch-thick, 3.5lb 13.3-inch notebook which, aside from its thin profile and conspicuous lack of an optical drive, is a fairly standard piece of notebook hardware. You can get just about anything you want in one of these guys—Core 2 Solo, Pentium ULV or Celeron processors; up to 8GB of RAM and up to 500GB of storage—but after a while you’ll start to lose the price advantage that makes it attractive in the first place. It’ll be around that $700-$800 pricepoint that the U350 shines.

These days, it’s easy to find a serviceable mainstream notebook for less than $650. But in this price range, you often have to settle for a bulky, cheap-looking machine, with a short battery life. Lenovo’s IdeaPad Y450 is a welcome exception, offering a strong combination of design, portability, and features at a price ($619) typically reserved for bargain-basement systems.

With the IdeaPad S10-2, Lenovo has put its netbook line on a diet, shaving 0.2 pounds off the weight and 0.2 inches off the thickness (at its thinnest point) of the original S10. While some may like the new look, we think it’s a giant leap backward in attractiveness.

While the original S10 has a sleek, futuristic aesthetic with squared off edges, attractive metal accents, and vents that look like they belong on a spaceship, the S10-2 just looks cheap. Its white glossy plastic lid (also available in pink, gray, or black) is adorned with an unattractive circle-patterned imprint that is reminiscent of 1970s-era wallpaper or the Target logo, depending on your point of view. The hinge covers, which had been sleek metal discs on the S10, look like a pair of used thumbtacks.
